History
Virginia is a beautiful, lovely and passionate state
soaked with interesting history. Humans have occupied Virginia for at least 5000
years. The first English colony in the New World was founded by Captain James
Smith and is crew when they sailed up the Chesapeake Bay and founded Jamestown
which was Named for the 'Virgin Queen' Elizabeth I, the territory originally
occupied most of America's Eastern seaboard. Most of the colonists had
already died from starvation by 1610 in their quest for gold, until colonist
John Rolfe discovered tobacco which became one of Virginia's most valuable
commodities.
In 1607 the English settlers established the first
permanent colony in the New World making Virginia the birthplace of America.
In nearly every major American event, the Commonwealth
of Virginia has played a major role, from the Revolutionary and Civil Wars to
the Civil Rights movement and the tragedy that took place on September 11, 2001
when terrorist hijackers crashed a jet into the U.S. Pentagon in Arlington,
Virginia.
Virginians were indispensible to the founding of
the American Republic, Virginia is nicknamed the "Old Dominion" and sometimes
the "Mother of Presidents" after the eight U.S. presidents who were born there -
George Washington was born in Westmoreland County on February 22, 1732
(he was the 1st US President, serving from 1789 to 1797).
Thomas Jefferson was born in Shadwell on April 13, 1743 (he was the 3rd
US President, serving from 1801 to 1809).
James Madison was born in Port Conway on March 16, 1751 (he was the 4th
US President, serving from 1809 to 1817).
James Monroe was born in Westmoreland County on April 28, 1758 (he was
the 5th US President, serving from 1817 to 1825).
William Henry Harrison was born in Berkeley on February 9, 1773 (he was
the 9th US President, serving in 1841).
John Tyler was born in Greenway on March 29, 1790 (he was the 10th US
President, serving from 1841 to 1845).
Zachary Taylor was born near Barboursville on November 24, 1784 (he was
the 12th US President, serving from 1849 to 1850).
Woodrow Wilson was born in Staunton on December 28, 1856 (he was the 28th
US President, serving from 1913 to 1921).
The state profited from the sale of tobacco, cotton and the
slave trade in 1860, slaves made up nearly one-third of the
population. Virginia seceded from the Union in 1861, and
Richmond became the capital of the Confederacy, but Western
counties, loyal to the Union, split off to become West Virginia
in 1863.
